Welcome to Kefalonia!
An island in the Ionian Sea with a population of 45,000 people
Kefalonia (Greek: Κεφαλλονιά, Κεφαλονιά) is a Greek island, named after the mythological figure Kefalus (Cifalis). Its name literally translates to "island with a head" (gr: κεφάλι - head), so the name is also thought to have come from the island's appearance.
Geography Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Islands. The island of Kefalonia, along with the island of Ithaca, forms the prefecture of Kefalonia and Ithaca, whose capital is Argostoli.
The island’s population is close to 45,000. In terms of population, it is one of the highest growing regions of Greece, with a growth rate of 35% to 40% during the 1990s. Argostoli is home to a third of the island's population and Liksuri is the second-largest town on the island. Almost two thirds of the population of the whole island live in these two towns
North of Kefalonia is Ithaca, an island that owes its glory to Greek myths. It is famous around the world thanks to Homer's epics Iliad and Odyssey, as the birthplace of the Greek hero Odyssey.
